New Thing #212: Gears of War 3 Beast Mode

Gears-of-war-3-beast-mode-guide

I’ve been playing the hell out of Gears of War 3 since it came out last week. Campaign, co-op, Horde mode, everything. Everything that is except the new Beast mode where you get to play as any number of locust creatures battling the humans.

During our forty-five minutes or so of play tonight I got to utterly destroy COGs as, among other things, a friggin’ Berserker. If you’ve every played Gears of War before, you know how awesome that sounds. If you haven’t played Gears of War before, well, take my word for it.

Although it took a little figuring out at first, once we got the hang of it, Beast Mode was great fun. And it’ll end up being even better when there’s more than two of us going up against the enemy.

New Thing #72: Gears of War 3 Beta

The first Gears of War will forever be one of the best multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had. It probably helps that it was the only game that I could hold my own in long after the game went on sale, mostly because I was good with the sniper rifle.

The second Gears of War will forever be one of the WORST multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had. It was nearly broken out of the gate and somehow they managed to take all of the fun out of it once it was actually functional.

The third Gears of War seems, well, like the first. But bigger, brighter and certainly bloodier. The maps seem more thought out, the game feels balanced and the gameplay frenetic, without ever feeling cheap.

I never thought I’d find something as satisfying as exploding an enemy’s head from across the map with one well timed shot, but charging at a guy with a bayonet and lifting him in the air with it just might be up there.

Thanks for the beta code, Stew, I’ll be sure to spare you a headshot or two whenever I get my hands on the Longshot.
