New Thing #278: The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams

I heard a cut from The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams on Metro Morning today and was happy to find it available on rdio at work today.

I loved what I heard on the radio and it reminded me of Mermaid Avenue, my favourite Wilco project that took never produced Woodie Guthrie lyrics and turned them into songs.

The story goes that a janitor found the lost lyric notes in a dumpster in 2006 and Bob Dylan completed them in 2008. Then a whole bunch of artists ranging from Jack White to Merle Haggard recorded them.

It’s a lovely album. Not as catchy and instantly classic as Mermaid Avenue was to me, but heart felt and lovely.

Now is it wrong that I really want to do a deep dive into Merle Haggard’s back catalogue?
