New Thing #164: Spanish Sparkling Wine

Scale_4

Cava

I don’t purport myself to be any great oenophile by any stretch, but my friend Steve seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to wines. Tonight he and his wife Lynne shared a Mont Marçal Cava dry sparkling wine with me which was particularly excellent.

This comes as a complete surprise to me since:

a) I’ve never had a Spanish wine that I’ve liked and
b) I’ve never had a sparkling wine until $80 a bottle that I cared to finish the glass

Both of those things point to my ignorance of both Spanish and sparkling wines in general. And I have no one but myself to blame for that.

So chalk this one up to a fantastic new discovery: affordable Champagne*!

*Yes, I am aware that Champagne only comes from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France but cut me a little slack here. You can only write “sparkling wine” so many times in one blog post. Damn it, you’ve just made me type it again.
